Chicsew UK Review: Is It Worth It? Sizing, Quality, and Returns — Honestly

This article contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend brands we'd genuinely point a friend toward.

A note on this review: we haven't personally ordered from Chicsew for this article. What we've done instead is go through Chicsew's own sizing charts and returns policy, and analyse hundreds of verified buyer reviews across Trustpilot, Hitched, Reddit, and wedding forums — so you don't have to spend an afternoon doing it yourself.

Where we can verify something from official sources, we say so. Where findings are split between buyers, we say that too.

Chicsew comes up constantly in UK bridesmaid dress searches. The prices are low (£30–£70 for most styles), the size range runs from a UK 4 to a UK 30 with custom sizing available, and the commission rates are among the highest in the category — which is why you'll see it recommended in a lot of affiliate guides. We've covered it ourselves in our bridesmaid dresses under £50 UK round-up.

But brides keep searching for one specific thing: an honest review. Not a list of product photos and a paragraph of enthusiasm. A straight answer to whether Chicsew actually delivers what it shows in its photos, whether the sizing holds up, and what happens if you need to return something.

That's what this is.

What Chicsew Is

Chicsew is an online bridesmaid and occasion dress brand. It operates from China (the address on their UK Trustpilot listing is in Suzhou), with a UK-facing site at chicsew.co.uk.

The range covers bridesmaid dresses in a wide selection of silhouettes and colours, plus some occasion wear, accessories, and veils. Prices for bridesmaid styles typically sit between £30 and £65.

The brand markets itself heavily on its custom sizing feature, which is free on all orders — you provide your measurements rather than choosing a standard size, and the dress is made to those. This is where a lot of the story gets complicated.

Sizing Accuracy: What We Found

Standard sizing

Chicsew's standard size chart uses body measurements (bust, waist, hips) rather than UK clothing size labels as the primary guide. Their chart at the time of writing runs from a UK 4 (81cm bust, 65cm waist, 90cm hip) through to a UK 30 (142cm bust, 130cm waist, 151cm hip).

The important thing to know: this is not how UK high street sizing works. When a UK retailer says "size 12," they typically build in some ease allowance. Chicsew's chart maps measurements more directly to the garment. The gap matters for brides who don't have measuring tape experience, or who've always bought by label size without checking measurements.

Buyer feedback on standard sizing is split. Some reviewers report that the dress fit as expected when they followed the measurement chart. A significant number — particularly on Reddit and wedding forums — report that dresses ran considerably smaller than the size they ordered. One commonly cited example: a buyer who typically wears a UK 10 found that a UK 10 on Chicsew fit more like a UK 6 or 8. Another reported ordering a size 10 based on the chart and the dress being unwearably small.

The honest read on this: the standard sizing requires you to measure your body and match it to the chart, not to order your usual UK label size. If you do one without the other, you're likely to get a dress that doesn't fit.

There's also a consistent complaint about length. Multiple buyers across platforms note that floor-length dresses arrived longer than they appeared in photos — often requiring professional hemming. If you're shorter than average, factor this in.

Custom sizing

Chicsew offers free custom sizing, where you supply your exact measurements (bust, waist, hips, height, and hollow-to-floor) and the dress is made specifically for them.

The reviews on custom sizing are genuinely more positive. Some Trustpilot reviewers note that Chicsew contacted them before production to confirm measurements, which is a good sign for quality control. Buyers who used the custom option and had themselves measured by a dressmaker or tailoring service are largely satisfied with the fit.

The complication: custom-sized dresses are non-returnable. If you use the custom option and the fit is wrong, you cannot get a refund. You can request a local alteration reimbursement (Chicsew offers up to approximately $30/£25 toward local alterations on custom orders), but that's the ceiling of what's available if something doesn't work.

This means custom sizing requires you to be confident in your measurements. If you haven't been measured by a professional, go to a local alterations shop and pay a few pounds to get your measurements taken properly before placing a custom order.

Fabric and Construction Quality

Chicsew uses chiffon, satin, and velvet as their primary fabrics. Their product photos are good — the dresses photograph well and the styling is attractive.

The buyer feedback on fabric quality is more divided than the official product descriptions would suggest.

On the positive side: reviewers on Trustpilot and Hitched frequently describe the satin styles as "soft," "flattering," and better quality than they expected for the price. Some floor-length chiffon styles get good marks for drape. For simpler silhouettes — A-line, empire line, flutter sleeve — the quality seems most consistent.

On the negative side: buyers on Reddit and Reviews.io describe some styles as feeling considerably cheaper than the photos suggest, with one reviewer describing the interior construction as inconsistent with the exterior finish. This seems most common on more heavily constructed styles — mermaid silhouettes, boned bodices, and heavily embellished designs — where the engineering required to make the dress work is more complex.

The honest summary: for simpler styles in chiffon or satin, the quality is broadly in line with the price point. For more structured styles, the risk of inconsistency is higher.

Colour Accuracy

Chicsew sells fabric swatches, which is a genuine advantage. If colour matching matters to you — and for a bridal party, it almost always does — ordering a swatch before committing is the sensible approach.

Buyer feedback on colour accuracy is mixed. Some reviewers report that the colour matched the swatch or on-screen selection well. Others note variation between what they saw and what arrived. Dye lot variation is a real issue with any made-to-order dress brand, particularly when ordering the same colour across multiple dresses for a bridal party.

The practical advice: if you're ordering multiple dresses in the same colour, order them all at the same time rather than in batches. And order a swatch first.

Returns and Customer Service: The Reality

This is the section that takes the longest to explain, because the returns policy contains several things that are easy to miss. From Chicsew's own published returns policy:

What can be returned: Standard-size dresses in a standard colour, in sizes up to and including UK 18, in unworn, unwashed, unaltered condition with original tags attached.

What cannot be returned: Custom-sized dresses — non-refundable regardless of fit issues. Standard-size dresses in sizes above UK 18 — non-returnable if you simply don't like them (only returnable if defective). Accessories, veils, and fabric swatches.

The process and timeline: You must contact customer service within 7 days of receiving your order. The package must be returned within 15 days of delivery. You are responsible for all return shipping costs. Chicsew does not provide return labels. Because the return address is overseas, this is not a small amount — it can easily run to £20–£40 or more for a tracked international parcel. For change-of-mind returns, Chicsew takes a 10% restocking fee, and original shipping costs are non-refundable.

The cancellation policy: If you cancel within 24 hours of ordering, you get a full refund. After 24 hours, the refund percentage drops significantly: 50% of the dress price after 24–72 hours, 30% after 72–120 hours, 20% after 120 hours. Once an order has shipped, it cannot be cancelled.

What buyers report: several reviewers on Reddit and Reviews.io describe being offered partial refunds or local alteration reimbursements rather than returns when they had quality issues. Some report difficulty reaching customer service within the 7-day window. The return shipping cost to China is a meaningful barrier, particularly for a dress priced at £35–£45 — the cost to return can approach the cost of the dress itself.

None of this makes Chicsew uniquely bad — many overseas brands operate similarly. But it is meaningfully different from the returns experience at Goddiva (UK-based, free returns), ASOS (free returns within 28 days), or Ever-Pretty (European return centre).

The practical implication: ordering from Chicsew is lower-risk if you use the swatch service, follow the measurement chart carefully, and order a standard size below UK 18. It is higher-risk if you're ordering custom size (non-returnable) or a size above UK 18 (non-returnable if you don't like it), or if you're placing a group order where multiple things might need to come back.

Price vs Value: Where It Works and Where It Doesn't

Where Chicsew wins:

The size range is the standout. A UK 4 to a UK 30, with custom sizing available for free, is genuinely unusual in this price bracket. For a bridal party that includes bridesmaids who struggle to find options in standard UK ranges — or who want a dress made precisely to their measurements — this is a real advantage over brands that cap out at a UK 22.

The price is competitive. Floor-length bridesmaid dresses in the £30–£50 range, with custom sizing available, is a strong offer. For the right buyer, this is good value.

Where it doesn't:

The returns model is the main limitation. For a UK buyer, returning a dress overseas is neither free nor quick. If you're uncertain about sizing, the cost of a mistake is higher here than with UK-based competitors.

Quality consistency on complex styles is a risk. If you're drawn to a more structured silhouette — a mermaid dress, a heavily boned bodice, a dress with significant embellishment — the reviews are inconsistent enough that we'd say order a simpler style for lower risk, or order from a brand with a better return path.

The Verdict

Chicsew is worth considering if:

You or one of your bridesmaids needs a size above UK 22, or needs custom sizing for a non-standard fit — the range here is genuinely broader than most competitors.

You're drawn to a simpler silhouette (A-line, empire line, flutter sleeve) in chiffon or satin, where the quality reports are most consistently positive.

You're prepared to order a swatch first, measure carefully, and accept that returning something will involve overseas shipping at your cost.

Look elsewhere if:

You want a straightforward, free, low-risk return process. Goddiva (UK-based, free returns) or ASOS (free 28-day returns) are simpler on this front.

You need a more structured style — mermaid, heavily boned, or heavily embellished — where quality consistency is less reliable.

You're placing a group order where multiple dresses might need to come back. The combination of time pressure (7 days to contact, 15 days to return), your cost for international shipping, and the non-returnable rules on custom and plus sizes makes this high-stress for a group.

Alternatives Worth Considering

Goddiva — Our top pick at this price point. UK-based, free returns, true-to-size, consistent colour across orders. Runs to a UK 22.

Ever-Pretty — Strong floor-length styles, wide size range (UK 4–26), more consistent fabric quality than Chicsew on most styles. Returns go to a European address (not UK), so shipping costs apply but are lower than returning to China.

Both are covered in more detail in our bridesmaid dresses under £50 UK round-up.
